Camellia japonica 'Princess Baciocchi'

Every flower is a little act of gracious drama 😏

Family: Theaceae • Pot diameter: 15 cm • Height: ~30 cm

Theaceae Evergreen shrub Light: bright partial shade Care: moderate Slow–medium growth

The Camellia japonica 'Princess Baciocchi' stands out for its refined, soft bicolour blooms in shades of pink and white, like a delicate, classic flower arrangement set against dark, glossy evergreen foliage. Even as a young plant in a pot it already works as a ready-made focal point by a doorway, on a terrace or on a sheltered balcony; over time it becomes a long-lived anchor plant in partial shade schemes together with other acid-loving ornamentals.

Light

🌤️ Partial shade
Morning sun or filtered light, sheltered from harsh midday heat.

Watering

💧 Steady
Substrate kept slightly moist, avoiding extremes of drought or waterlogging.

Temperature

🌡️ 5–24°C
Cold-tolerant; in pots protect from severe frost.

Soil / pH

🌱 Acidic
Ericaceous compost with good drainage.

What makes it special

  • 🌸 Refined, pink-and-white bicolour flowers that give a calm yet rich effect.
  • 🌿 Dark, glossy evergreen foliage that holds structure and colour all year.
  • ✨ A classic cultivar with a noble character, ideal for timeless entrance plantings.

Best uses

  • 🪴 In a decorative pot by a front door, steps or entrance walkway.
  • 🏡 In partial-shade corners with acid-loving plants for a soft pink–green colour story.
  • 🌳 As an evergreen shrub in borders, planted in pairs or small groups for symmetry.

Where to place it

Camellias love bright partial shade, with gentle morning sun or filtered light and protection from harsh midday sun, especially against south-facing walls or exposed balconies. Choose a position with relatively stable moisture and avoid strong, drying winds that strip water quickly from the substrate. In pots it helps to place the plant close to a stable surface (wall, railing) to reduce temperature shocks and to protect buds from extremes.

What to combine it with

  • With other acid-lovers such as Hydrangea, Azalea, Rhododendron, so they can share the same substrate and care routine.
  • With ferns and shade-tolerant perennials to soften the base and create a lush green backdrop.
  • With small conifers or box-type shrubs for a classic, symmetrical look by entrances and paths.

Design goal: an evergreen, structured backdrop with elegant bicolour flowers that fits seamlessly into both classic and contemporary outdoor concepts.

Origin of the cultivar click to read

Taxonomic background: Camellia japonica belongs to the genus Camellia within the family Theaceae and has been one of the most iconic ornamental acid-loving shrubs in mild temperate climates for centuries. The huge diversity of flower colours and forms has led to hundreds of named cultivars.

Natural range & habitat: Its wild origins lie in East Asia, in woodlands with humid, mild climates and acidic soils. From there, via botanical gardens and historic estates, camellias found their way into gardens across Europe and the Mediterranean, especially in regions with mild winters.

Naming & character of the cultivar: The cultivar 'Princess Baciocchi' is part of the tradition of “aristocratic” camellias, with refined flower shapes and delicate bicolour petals. Its pink-and-white palette makes it perfect for plantings where a softer, more romantic character is desired compared with the bold, solid-red varieties.

Selection & propagation: As a stabilised cultivated variety, 'Princess Baciocchi' is propagated vegetatively (cuttings, grafting) so that its flowering and foliage traits remain unchanged. It is offered mainly by specialist nurseries for acid-loving plants and classic camellias.

1) Substrate: Use an ericaceous (acid-loving) compost for camellias/gardenias/rhododendrons, rich yet light, with very good drainage and a pH around 5–6. Avoid chalky soils and hard water that raise the pH.
2) Watering: Keep the compost slightly moist, watering when the top layer starts to dry. Do not let the pot dry out completely, but also never leave it standing in water, especially during bud formation and development.
3) Position & feeding: Place your camellia in bright partial shade, protected from intense midday sun and frost. Feed in spring and again at the end of summer with a fertiliser for acid-loving plants, always on moist compost and in moderate doses.

🤔 Did you know? Cultivars such as 'Princess Baciocchi' are often used in entrance plantings or as matching pairs of container plants, so that their gentle bicolour flowers “welcome” visitors even before they see the rest of the garden.
Why you'll love it info
  • 🌸 For its refined pink-and-white bicolour that feels soft yet luxurious.
  • 🌿 For the evergreen, glossy foliage that keeps structure and colour all year.
  • 🪴 Because it thrives in pots, even in smaller outdoor spaces.
  • 🏡 For the “quiet luxury” it brings to entrances, terraces and acid-lover corners.
🧠 Greenleaf for nerds — scientific facts nobody asked for geek
  • 🧬 As a classic acid-lover, Camellia japonica makes best use of trace elements such as iron at a pH of 5.0–6.0; at higher pH it often shows chlorosis on the youngest leaves.
  • 🌱 Its root system is shallow and sensitive to compaction, so avoid deep hoeing or heavy foot traffic around the root zone.
  • 💨 Flower buds are initiated many months before opening; sudden changes in watering, light or temperature can cause bud drop.
  • 🧪 In professional plantings, choosing the right rootstock and keeping the pH stable are crucial for consistent bicolour patterns and flower quality in cultivars such as 'Princess Baciocchi'.
What light does it need? light

It needs bright partial shade with gentle morning sun or filtered light. Avoid harsh midday sun, which can stress the foliage and buds, especially on exposed balconies.
