Oil painting by Lili Ege - 1960

Lili Ege was born in 1913 in Lolland, Denmark. She studied under Folmer Bonnén, a successful Danish painter, before featuring in various exhibitions in both Sweden and Denmark. Her paintings are largely of the landscape, and are brought to life by the various shades of green through which she articulates a fondness for nature. These shades, although subtly different, produce an indistinct softness between different parts of the land, imbuing its contours and formations with a gentle lull. 

Green appears to be the colour through which Ege finds artistic expression, and this piece is no different. The clearest distinction exists between the ocean and the land, but even the sea is tinged with an almost turquoise-verdant undertone. Ege’s considered brushstrokes give shape to its different elements, as in the curved foliage of the trees or in the slightly darker forms that sit on the horizon, presumably ships far off enough that from the artist’s perspective they appear out of focus. Even so, nature is the predominant concern in this piece – whilst evidence of that which is man-made exists, it is the green pastures that are given the most contemplation.
